This was a memorable day. When we weren't glued to the tiny little black and white television we were joining the public party. There was a fancy dress parade for the children, tables groaning with food, Maypole dancers and red, white and blue everywhere. We were staying with Aunt Hazel in Wantage because our mother was in hospital with a new baby.
